Freedom, Just on Paper

Posted by on in Humanities & Social Sciences

Today, the subject of gay marriages and their existence in the social society is a very sensitive subject. The question is not about what the gay community wants or their feelings, likes and dislikes but humiliating views of society about them. We are the largest democracy in the world, but just on paper. Neglect towards the gay community makes it very difficult for them to express, live freely, or give opinions. A question come to my mind, What good have we done to deserve this right that they haven’t?, The answer is NOTHING.Our general outlook towards Gay community or the society at large is of negligence and an emotion where we believe that they do not exist in the society. The question is what is wrong in being Gay? It is a matter of choice and choice cannot be forced. When the constitution of India recognizes them who are we to make fun of them and bully them. The portray of Gays in films like Dostana and Kal Ho Na Ho is over the top cliché. And our great Bollywood obsessed public believes it to be true that’s the saddest part.

Recently in Chennai Under a bright midday sun on Elliot's Beach, a group of people dressed up in rainbow colours Wearing shining masks, they held up colourful posters and banners. Some of the messages of the banner which were not only directed at the society but also the government. The messages read, :"We are gay, but we still want to start a family and seek legal protection", "Why can't I marry my boyfriend", "Hey there, we are a pink couple" and "Why can't we adopt a child?"

Such courage is essential on the past of the community to come out in open and deal with the subject. There is nothing wrong that they are doing, every individual has the right to enjoy their life. By wearing BEING HUMAN T- shirts you do not become a good soul , you become one by living peacefully and letting others live.

They say it is time the government and the society admit that a homosexual relationship is natural. They also want the security of marriage. They have the same dreams of registering their marriage and being blessed by their parents. Even small things like naming their partner as a beneficiary in an insurance policy or will is not possible. The couples in fact believes that if they had been open about their relationship while house hunting, their apartment may have never come through.

Though it is legalized in more than 13 countries across the globe, adoption by a gay couple is not possible in India because laws do not recognize two men or women as a 'couple'. The only way a gay person can have a child is by claiming to be a 'single Hindu male' during adoption or through surrogacy. However, marriage is still a distant dream for the LGBT community.

Nobody can understand the grievance of the community. We as a people must understand and make them an integral part of our society.
