 Brief Overview 

This course provides an introduction to research methodology, providing students with a framework for research methodology, which is a foundation for their individual research projects and dissertations. Students will learn to review literature, identify a research problem, formulate hypotheses and identify appropriate research designs for their proposed project.

This course will be followed by workshops that will focus on construction of data tools, data collection and analysis, and writing a research report in later semesters. 

 Course Objectives 

Students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts of research methods
  • Demonstrate an understanding of research ethics
  • Identify different sources of information and therefore review appropriate literature
  • Demonstrate knowledge about research design and sampling
  • Demonstrate an ability to write a research proposal that progresses into a research study

 Teaching Methodology 

The course is conducted in a step-by-step manner where the process of undertaking a research project is broken down into steps and students learn each of the steps and complete assessments as the semester progresses. By the end of the semester, the student will have a research proposal.  


Students are expected to –

  • Complete all required reading for each scheduled class as per the course outline,
  • Actively participate in class activities and discussions, and
  • Complete all evaluative processes for successful course completion!
