As part of a field trip for the Only One Earth course, students of SSLA were taken to Babulal Gandhi’s horticulture farm in Phaltan, a low rainfall area in the Satara district of Maharashtra. 85 year old Babulal Gandhi had been a part of the Bhoodan Movement during the Indian freedom struggle. His completely self sufficient farm employs various organic farming methods with very little human intervention.
The students were given a warm welcome by the Gandhi family, followed by a hearty breakfast of fresh farm products. They were then taken on a round of the huge farm and were explained the various farming techniques used. After a sumptuous lunch of the local cuisine, the students were given a wonderful, rare opportunity of a tractor ride of the whole farm, to appreciate the diverse flora and fauna of the area.
The students departed very inspired and with a deep sense of satisfaction of having spent such a quality time in the serene land, away from the chaos of the city.
